February 6, 2023 - Is John Stockton the GOAT?

Man did I drop the ball this week… I am in Europe serving in Budapest and was laying in bed last night and realized what day it was… not only was I late on writing the Monday game plan, I was not even paying attention to what day it was. I guess the jet lag has won the battle this trip…

For this week, being late did allow some sports history to take place that fit beautifully into the messages/theme we have had while on our current mission… news that brought about more discussion on who is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) in basketball… Last night (or this morning in the time zone I am in) Lebron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in  NBA history, and Lebron potentially has a few years left of adding to his total. That record has stood for almost 40 years, and the other AMAZING thing is that Lebron also is in 4th place on the all-time assists list…

This devo is not to argue if Lebron is the GOAT, as haters are gonna hate and lovers are gonna love… and there are valid arguments for a few players to hold that title. (AND BY THE WAY, IF A PLAYER IS TRULY IN THE DISCUSSION, HE IS PRETTY STINKIN GOOD!)

But if Jesus were asked who is the GOAT of basketball, He may have a very different answer (and I say this “tongue in cheek”)… maybe He would list a player that never is in the GOAT discussion…

Luke 22:26 “But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be… he who serves.”

Maybe Jesus would say that the GOAT is John Stockton… the all-time leader in NBA assists… he retired with 15, 806 assists, and if you add his total personal points scored he was responsible for the production of well over 50,000 points!

In the game of life we see that the greatest came to earth to serve…

Luke 22:27 “… Yet I am among you as the One who serves.” (Jesus)

And He humbled Himself and served “and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:8b)

You wanna be great? SERVE!
